Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls); Double, Black
(2nd. Day within the Octave of All Saints - Not commemorated at Lauds)

Office: Common of the Votive Office of the Dead or the Proper . At the Little Hours, the psalms and canticles are prayed sine cantu or ad libitum may be sung according to the tone given in post-1911 editions of the Liber Usualis. Requiem aeternam replaces Gloria Patri. Penitential kneeling applies for all Collects in the Office and at the Collects and Postcommunions of the three Masses.

At Mattins, Invitatory Regem cui omnia vivunt from the Common, No Hymn; 3 nocturnes - Antiphons Dirige, etc. (doubled) w/ Pss. 5, 6, 7, 22, 24, 26, 39, 40 & 41 from the Common; no absolutions and benedictions, lessons (sung without title) from the Proper w/ responds from the Proper at all nocturnes, 9th. respond = Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna, etc., No Te Deum.

At Lauds,No introduction, Antiphons Exsultabunt, etc.(doubled) from the Common w/ Pss. 50, 64, 62 & 66, Canticle of Ezechiel, and 148-150, No Chapter or Hymn, Versicle and Benedictus Antiphon Ego sum from the Common, Pater noster, Preces, and Collect as given in the Proper and sung kneeling, No Comm. of the Octave, Requiescant in pace.

At Prime, No introduction, hymn, or antiphon, begins immediately with Pss. 53, 118.1 & 118.2, No Chapter or Short Respond, Pater noster and special Preces followed by Collect from the Proper, Martyrology, Proper Versicle and additional oration after Martyrology from the Proper, all else is omitted.

At the Hours, No introduction, hymn, or antiphon, begin immediately with the respective divisiones of Ps. 118, Pater noster and all that follows as at Prime up to but excluding the Martyrology.

Three Masses may be offered today after None. If only one Mass (or if the principal Mass), the formulary of the first Mass is used, No Judica me, No Gloria, No Credo, Gloria Patri omitted at the Lavabo, Preface of the Dead (always Ferial Tone), At the Agnus Dei - Dona eis requiem (sempiternam), No Prayer for Peace, Requiescant in Pace, No Last Blessing, Last Gospel from St. John's Prologue, Absolution after Mass (for the deceased in general).

After None and Mass(es), the Office of All Souls' Day ceases, and the liturgical color changes to white (by reason of the Octave) for the 24th. Sunday after Pentecost, Semidouble, the following day.

At Vespers, Antiphons Benedictus, etc. (not doubled) w/  Pss. 143-147 from the Psalter for Saturday; Chapter, Hymn O lux beata Trinitas, & Versicle from the Psalter, Magnificat Antiphon Vidi Dominum from the Proper (Saturday before the First Sunday of November); Collect of the Sunday (4th. resumed Sunday after Epiphany), Commemoration of the Octave (Antiphon O quam gloriosus, Versicle Exsultabunt, and Collect as at second Vespers of All Saints), No Suffrages.

At Compline, Te lucis sung in the ordinary tone with the regular doxology, No Preces, Salve Regina sung in the solemn tone and standing.
