The Office and Mass of the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas are transferred to 30 December this year; hence, the Sunday is not commemorated tonight or tomorrow.

* In the USA, S. Frances Xavier Cabrini, V is assigned to 22 December, but this year, because of the transfer of the universal feast of S. Thomas the Apostle to the same day, Mother Cabrini's feast is transferred to 23 December. This was a Duplex II Classis feast during the Pacelli era; the CTO proposes reducing it to a Simplex across the USA (as as not to impede the Greater Advent Feriae any further), but as a Duplex in selected dioceses only, such as the Archdioceses of NY and Chicago. As a Simplex, Cabrini is commemorated at Lauds and Mass only of S. Thomas, after the Feria, on 22 December.

** The days within the octaves of the three Comites' feasts are Simplex in rank and are not commemorated in occurrence and concurrence with the Office of a Duplex I or II classis feast. Hence. the first time these octaves are commemorated is at Lauds on Monday, 29 December, ensuring a festal Office with minimal commemorations on the three Comites' feast days themselves.

Psalmody Comparison - Just for Fun

The immemorial custom of praying all 150 psalms in one week is a given, but it exists more in theory than in actual practice for more than half the year even under the modified 1570 kalendar which we employ here. So. for no particular reason except to satisfy a bit of curiosity, I decided to track the number of unique psalms which would be prayed under different iterations of the Roman Breviary in a specific week. For this exercise, I chose the first week of Advent 2014 (i.e. 30 Nov - 6 Dec) which contains a, more or less, average mixture of feasts and feriae. The comparisons are based solely on the universal kalendar as rendered under the following iterations as applied to the current year:
1. The actual 1568/1570 kalendar (but using Gregorian dates)
2. The actual 1910 kalendar
3. The CTO
4. Divino Afflatu (1911-1913)
5. Pacelli (1956, aka Bugnini 1.0)
6. 1962 (aka Bugnini 2.0)

Each day shows the number of unique psalms prayed; fragments of psalms (e.g. Ps. 30: 1-6 at Compline) do not count for this exercise. When a particular psalm is repeated, it is only marked once, usually on Sunday, and therefore, not tallied again on the subsequent days it's used (e.g. Pss. 94, 118). Canticles are also excluded from this consideration.

Saturday 6 Dec              0               0              0            15             15           16

Total Unique Psalms:   114           64            92           129        135          148
% of Psalter:                75.3%      42.0%      60.7%      86.0%    90.0%      98.7%

For the statistical minded:
Mean - 113.67 psalms
Standard Deviation - 28.3 psalms
The CTO is within one standard deviation of the mean, but so are1913 and Pacelli. 1570 is the mean.

Clearly 1910 and 1962 are the outliers, but the the modern "reformers" certainly must have valued praying all 150 psalms weekly as the highest good, no?

Simple Octaves

In addition to the current observance of the Octave of the Immaculate Conception with Simplex rank, we also propose that the following octaves be likewise observed:

Octave of S. Stephen, Protomartyr
Octave of S. John, Apostle & Evangelist
Octave of the Holy Innocents
Octave of the Solemnity of S. Joseph
Octave of S. John the Baptist
Octave of S. Lawrence, Deacon & Martyr
Octave of the Nativity of the BVM

The Simplex Octave is to be observed thus:

* All Dies infra Octavam are ranked Simplex and follow the usual rules governing Simplex feasts, i.e. only First Vespers, precedence over Feriae per Annum but yielding to major Feriae in Advent. These days are always commemorated at both Vespers and Lauds of a higher ranking Office, unless the Office is of a Duplex I or II Class feast in which case commemorations of most octaves are generally omitted.

* The Octave Day itself is a Duplex feast and carries precedence in occurrence and concurrence accordingly. It is not transferable, however, when it occurs on a privileged Sunday, in which case it is to be commemorated in the Sunday's Office, e.g. Octave Day of the Immaculate Conception falls on Gaudete Sunday.

* The psalmody when the Office is of the Dies infra is ferial at Vespers and Mattins and festal from Lauds to None as is the case for Simplex feasts; all other texts are taken from the feast day itself or Proper as noted.

* The lessons at Mattins on the Dies infra are ordered such that the first two lessons and responds are taken from the occurring Scripture, lesson two being the concatenation of the second and third lessons from the occurring Scripture; the third lesson is formed from concatenating the pre-Sarto second nocturn lessons for the day in the Proper into one lesson (or using only the text which is Proper and not from the Common).

* During the entirety of these octaves, unless specifically stated to the contrary, any proper doxology and/or melody for the hymns for the particular octave is to be observed continuously. However, during the Octave of the Immaculate Conception, when the Office is of the Sunday or Feria, the Advent formulae are observed, but during the same octave when the Office is of a feast without a proper doxology, the formulae of the BVM are observed. The same rules hold for the verse at the short respond at Prime.

* Unless otherwise stated, the colour of the Office and the Preface at Mass are determined by the octave on all days within it, including Sundays, except in Advent or when higher privileged octaves hold the determining rule. The Credo, by rule, is omitted during Simplex octaves unless the Mass of a particular feast (or a higher concurrent octave) occurring within it requires it, e.g. Doctor of the Church.

This, we believe, is the best approach to borrow from Sarto's organization and distinction of octaves without sacrificing the nature of octaves (i.e. there are still days within). This also accords further usage of the ferial psalms in our quest to achieve optimal and actual, and not just theoretical, usage of the Ancient Roman Psalter.

As a review, the remaining Octaves not listed above retain the usual Semiduplex rank and rite on the Dies infra and a Duplex Majus for the Octave Day. Furthermore, the Octaves of Epiphany, Pascha, Pentecost, and Corpus Christi are privileged to the exclusion of all or nearly all occurring feasts.

Octave of the Immaculate Conception

The author of this CTO belongs to a Facebook Group dedicated to the promotion and discussion of the Divine Office, under its many legitimate and demonstrably illegitimate iterations. The group's administrator and this author, at the urging of the former some time ago, have been posting weekly, personal ordines, and in the last posting of the CTO on that site, a discussion arose concerning what frequency the Advent ferial Office should be accorded relative to festal days and, in particular, what should be the case concerning the Octave of the Immaculate Conception vis-a-vis Advent.

Last year, when we were ironing out the wrinkles of octaves in general (post-Sarto systemization vs. Tridentine ad-hoc rules), it was settled that we stick with the Tridentine system as was stated here. For review, every octave would, at minimum, consist of semiduplex dies infra octavam and a duplex dies octavae; additional privileges would apply to specific octaves (e.g. Pascha). However, Mr. Gregory DiPippo of the New Liturgical Movement, who is also a regular contributor on the Facebook page, stated that among some non-Roman Western rites, there is a precedent for simplex octaves, and such was not first invented under Sarto. He suggested that it would be beneficial to reduce the days within the Octave of the Immaculate Conception to simplex rank while keeping its Octave Day as a Duplex. The same could be said for some other octaves (e.g. Holy Innocents). This has caused this author to reevaluate our octave system and now reopen the discussion to the readers before next week's Ordo is posted.

Having followed the Traditional Roman Breviary under CTO guidelines for nearly 18 months, I am of the opinion that not all octaves should be treated equally. Leaving aside the obvious privileged octaves, should the Octaves of All Saints and the Assumption, on one hand, have the same status as those of S. Lawrence and the Holy Innocents? Furthermore, should the prohibition of octaves mandated for the entirety of Lent also be extended to all of Advent beyond Sapientiatide? If not, should the Octave of the Immaculate Conception, in fact, be downgraded simply (no pun intended) for the fact that it is Advent.

I am partial to the Advent ferial Office; it gets too little exposure, especially in the first two weeks. When I switched from 1962 to Divino Afflatu five or six years ago, I regretted that I had greatly reduced my praying the Advent Office despite the other obvious gains in such a transition. Switching from DA to the CTO last year resulted in no significant change to the balance because of the IC Octave. Does 1962 have something reasonable to offer in its relatively good balance between feast and feria this season but without abolishing the IC Octave?

If we were to establish a system of Simplex octaves, it would not be the Sarto system of a non-octave octaves, but simply the reduction of the six days infra octavam to Simplex; in effect, these days would trump feriae per annum, but would give way to the major feriae in penitential seasons according to the same rule governing Simplex feasts. Hence, Dec 9, 10, 12, and 14, on the universal kalendar would be Advent Feriae with a commemoration of the octave. The preces would still be omitted per the rules governing octaves, so there would be an increase to the ferial Office but with a leniency owing to the octave at the same time. Is this a reasonable amendment to our octave system?

John Lateran), Comms. of the Octave Day and the following XXII Sunday after Pentecost. At Compline, Te lucis sung in the solemn melody.

We hope that by retaining the integral Tridentine Office for all days within the Octave while allowing ad libitum the full Office of the Dead (modified from the 1911 texts) on All Souls' Day that we have resolved the dispute from last year. Mr. Gregory DiPippo of the New Liturgical Movement, tells me in personal correspondence that some religious orders had developed their own integral Requiem Offices for All Souls well before 1911, though they retained the fixed Pss. 53 and 118 for the Hours and Pss. 4, 90, and 133 for Compline rather than proper psalms akin to the Pian construction; hence there is some precedent for an integral Office, though perhaps as an addition to and not a substitute for the Office of the day within the Octave. Owing to life constraints, we propose allowing for substitution.

This is one of my favourite weeks liturgically - two major feasts bookending a ferial/vigiltide with a rest stop in the middle. Not quite the Triduum effect when Christ the King falls on 31 October, but still a rich liturgical pattern.

As a reminder, the CTO has kept the middle of September sparse for the sake of allowing the September Ember Days to be observed in full. This became completely impossible by the eve of Divino Afflatu because every day between 15 September and 24 September, the exact range on which these Ember Days may fall, had a festal observance of Semiduplex or Duplex rank. Despite restoring a better balance to the Temporale, this particualr Embertide problem was not rectified post-1911 wherein the same feasts carried over with the same ranks as before; it took the 1960 novelty of raising Ember Days to "Second Class" to allow these Ember Days pride of place again after a few centuries of perpetual commemorations. In our opinion, these Ember Days are the ones par excellence, the ones most attuned to the seasonal change, both in literal proximity to  the equinox and in the themes of the harvest/Old Law feasts once observed at this time of the year. Hence, we have kept the Stigmata of S. Francis as a particular feast only and reduced the ranks of Ss. Januarius & Eustace to Simplex on the universal kalendar.

* In the Franciscan Order, the Impression of the Stigmata on S. Francis, Duplex, White w/ Comm. of the Ember Day at Lauds, Mass (orations and Proper Last Gospel), and Vespers.

*** Because the common Vigil of S. Matthew falls on an Ember Day this year, the Vigil is neither observed nor commemorated this year per the rubrics - De Vigiliis, 2: "Si autem in Vigilia occurrat Festum solemne alicujus loci, vel ex solemnioribus infra annum...nihil tunc prorsus, nec commemoratio fit de Vigilia, excepta Vigilia EpiphaniƦ. Idem servetur quando aliqua, Vigilia venerit in Adventu, Quadragesima et Quatuor Temporibus, nulla enim in his Feriis de Vigilia fit commemoratio."
