Dominica de Passione

In the late morning of Saturday, 5 April:
All sacred images, excepting those of the angels, are veiled in purple following the Mass of the Feria (which follows None). After this, Passiontide begins and First Vespers of Passion Sunday are sung.

At First Vespers - Antiphons & psalms from the Psalter for Saturdays; Chapter proper for the Sunday; Hymn Vexilla Regis and Versicle Eripe for Passiontide (Kneel for the verse O Crux); Magnificat antiphon Ego sum; Collect of the Sunday; No Commemorations; the usual Suffrages are omitted now and henceforth until after Trinity Sunday. The noon Angelus is recited standing.

At Compline (in the evening) - Te lucis sung in the special melody given for Passiontide; the Gloria Patri is omitted in the Short Respond; Preces; Ave Regina Caelorum sung standing in the Solemn Tone.

At Mattins (late Saturday evening/early Sunday morning) - Invitatory Hodie si vocem audieritis without Gloria Patri at the end of Ps. 94; Hymn Pange lingua for Passiontide; 3 nocturnes: Antiphons and psalms from the Psalter for Sundays with Versicles proper for the Passiontide, lessons and responds from the Proper, no Te Deum.

At Lauds - Antiphons from the Proper for Sunday with Pss. 50, 117, 62-66, Benedicite, and 148-149-150; Chapter proper for the Sunday; Hymn Lustra sex and Versicle Eripe me for Passiontide; Benedictus antiphon Dicebat Jesus; Collect proper; no Commemorations or Suffrages.

At Prime - Jam lucis sung in the special melody for Passiontide; Antiphon from the Proper with Pss. 53, 92, 118.1, 118.2, and Quicumque; the Gloria Patri is omitted in the Short Respond; Dominical Preces; Short Lesson Faciem for the season.

At the Hours - Hymns sung in the special melody for Passiontide; Antiphons from the Proper with the respective divisiones of Ps. 118; Capitula from the Proper, Short Responds for Passiontide; Collect of the Sunday.

At Mass (after Terce) - the Gloria Patri is omitted in the Asperges and in all instances where it is usually placed within the Mass; Ps. 42 omitted in the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar; no Gloria, 2nd. orations against the Persecutors of the Church, Credo, Preface of the Holy Cross, Benedicamus Domino.

At Second Vespers (in the late afternoon/early evening) - Antiphons and psalms from the Psalter for Sundays; Chapter proper for the Sunday; Hymn Vexilla Regis and Versicle Eripe for Passiontide (Kneel for the verse O Crux); Magnificat antiphon Abraham; Collect of the Sunday; no Commemorations or Suffrages.

At Compline - Te lucis sung in the special melody given for Passiontide; the Gloria Patri is omitted in the Short Respond; Preces; Ave Regina Caelorum sung standing in the Solemn Tone.

General note for Passion Sunday-Spy Wednesday at Compline inclusive when the Office and Mass are de Tempore: the short doxology Gloria Patri is retained at the end of all psalms (except Ps. 94 at Mattins) and canticles in the Office; it is otherwise omitted in all Responds and entirely omitted within the Mass. The omission of this doxology does not become absolute until the Triduum.

M-Th - 7, 8, 9, & 10 April - Feriae of Passiontide.

Friday, 11 April - St. Leo the Great, Pope, Confessor, & Doctor (White, Double feast). Comm. of the Feria with 9th. Lesson at Mattins and Proper Last Gospel at Mass of the Feria. The Gloria Patri is restored to full usage this day. In some places ad libitum - Seven Dolors of the B.V.M.

Saturday, 12 April - Feria of Passiontide.
