Hebdomada: Week III of Advent

Notes for Advent:
1. Unless otherwise stated, all hymns retain the Per Annum doxologies but are sung in the Advent melodies. 
2. The Suffrages at Vespers and Lauds are omitted during the entirety of Advent and from Christmas through the Octave of the Epiphany inclusive.
3. The Feriae of Advent are major, not privileged. Hence, they supersede all Simplex feasts and are commemorated at Vespers, Lauds, and Mass on all festal days of nine lessons without exception during the season. The ferial office and Mass are penitential; hence penitential kneeling rules apply.
4. Vespers are still sung daily at their normal hour; this is not Lent.

Sunday, 14 December - Third (Gaudete) Sunday of Advent, Semiduplex, Violet or Rose. Privileged Sunday of the second class. Comm. Day VII within the Octave of the Immaculate Conception. Dominical Office of Advent. At Mattins, proper antiphons w/ the Sunday psalms and seasonal versicles for all three nocturnes, no Te Deum. At Lauds, antiphons proper w/ the Sunday psalms, Comm. of the Octave. At Prime, first antiphon from Lauds w/ Pss. 53, 117, 118.1, 118.2, and Quicumque, no Preces ratione Octavae. At the Hours, allocated antiphons from Lauds, Chapters proper. At Mass (after Terce), no Gloria, Comm. of the Octave only, Credo, Preface of the Trinity (or Gallican Advent Preface ad libitum), Benedicamus Domino. Vespers of the following day (change to white), Comm. of the Sunday. At Compline, proper doxology, no Preces.

From now until Compline tomorrow inclusive, the hymns at the Hours are sung with the proper doxology of the Incarnation in the melody of the BVM. 

Monday, 15 December - Octave Day of the Immaculate Conception of the BVM, Duplex,White. Comm. of the Feria. Office and Mass as on the feast and in the Proper. At Mattins, Te Deum. At Lauds and Mass, Comm. of the Feria.  II Vespers of the Octave Day, Comms. of the following and the Feria.

Tuesday, 16 December - Advent Feria, Simplex, Violet. Comm. S. Eusebius, BM.  Kneeling Day through Compline inclusive. Ferial Office of Advent. At Mattins, no Te Deum. At Lauds, Ferial Preces, Comm. of S. Eusebius. At Prime and the Hours, Ferial Preces. At Mass (after None, of the preceding Sunday), no Gloria, Comm. of S. Eusebius, 3rd. orations of Our Lady in Advent, Alleluia and verse are omitted, no Credo, Common Preface (or Gallican Advent Preface ad libitum), Benedicamus Domino. Vespers of the Feria, Ferial Preces. At Compline, Preces.

From now until Christmas Day inclusive, all particular octaves cease and are prohibited.

Wednesday, 17 December - Ember Wednesday and Greater Feria in Advent, Simplex, Violet. Kneeling Day through Compline inclusive. Ferial Office of Advent. At Mattins, no Te Deum. At Lauds and the Hours, proper antiphons (Wednesday before Christmas Eve) w/ ferial psalms, Ferial Preces, proper Collect for the day. At Mass (after None, Proper Mass for the Ember Day), no Gloria, 2nd. orations of Our Lady in Advent, 3rd. orations of the Holy Ghost, no Credo, Common Preface (or Gallican Advent Preface ad libitum), Benedicamus Domino. Vespers of the Feria, antiphons from the Psalter, Ferial Preces, Great Antiphon "O Sapientia" w/ Magnificat (solemn melody 2D), Collect of the preceding Sunday. At Compline, Preces.

Thursday, 18 November - Greater Feria in Advent, Simplex, Violet. Kneeling Day through Compline inclusive. Ferial Office of Advent. At Mattins, no Te Deum. At Lauds and the Hours, proper antiphons (Thursday before Christmas Eve) w/ ferial psalms, Ferial Preces, Collect of the preceding Sunday. At Mass (after None, of the preceding Sunday), no Gloria, 2nd. orations of Our Lady in Advent, 3rd. orations of the Holy Ghost, Alleluia and its verse are omitted, no Credo, Common Preface (or Gallican Advent Preface ad libitum), Benedicamus Domino. Vespers of the Feria, antiphons from the Psalter, Ferial Preces, Great Antiphon "O Adonai" w/ Magnificat (solemn melody 2D), Collect of the preceding Sunday. At Compline, Preces.

Friday, 19 December - Ember Friday and Greater Feria in Advent, Simplex, Violet. Kneeling Day through Compline inclusive. Ferial Office of Advent. At Mattins, no Te Deum. At Lauds and the Hours, proper antiphons (Friday before Christmas Eve) w/ ferial psalms, Ferial Preces, proper Collect for the day. At Mass (after None, Proper Mass for the Ember Day), no Gloria, 2nd. orations of Our Lady in Advent, 3rd. orations of the Holy Ghost, no Credo, Common Preface (or Gallican Advent Preface ad libitum), Benedicamus Domino. Vespers of the Feria, antiphons from the Psalter, Ferial Preces, Great Antiphon "O Radix Jesse" w/ Magnificat (solemn melody 2D), Collect of the preceding Sunday. At Compline, Preces.

Saturday, 20 December - Ember Saturday and Greater Feria in Advent, Simplex, Violet. Vigil of S. Thomas (at Mass only). Kneeling Day through None/Mass inclusive. Ferial Office of Advent. At Mattins, no Te Deum. At Lauds and the Hours, proper antiphons (Monday* before Christmas Eve but 4th. antiphon proper for Saturday) w/ ferial psalms, Ferial Preces, proper Collect for the day. At Mass (after None, Proper Mass for the Ember Day), five lessons after Kyrie, no Gloria, Comm. Vigil, 3rd. orations of Our Lady in Advent, no Credo, Common Preface (or Gallican Advent Preface ad libitum), Benedicamus Domino, Proper Last Gospel of the Vigil. Where a second Mass is possible in the same church, oratory, etc., Mass of the Vigil of S. Thomas w/o Comm. or Last Gospel of the Ember Day; at the earlier Mass of the Ember Day, no Comm. of the Vigil.

Vespers of the following Sunday, antiphons from the Proper at Lauds w/ Saturday psalms, Great Antiphon "O Clavis David" w/ Magnificat (solemn melody 2D), no Comms. At Compline, Preces.

* The feast of S. Thomas the Apostle is transferred to Monday, 22 December this year thereby displacing the proper ferial antiphons assigned to the Monday before Christmas Eve; these antiphons are, therefore, moved to the open Feria on Saturday, except that the fourth antiphon at Lauds w/ the looooooong Canticle of Moses is proper for the Saturday.
