The Office and Mass of the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas are transferred to 30 December this year; hence, the Sunday is not commemorated tonight or tomorrow.

* In the USA, S. Frances Xavier Cabrini, V is assigned to 22 December, but this year, because of the transfer of the universal feast of S. Thomas the Apostle to the same day, Mother Cabrini's feast is transferred to 23 December. This was a Duplex II Classis feast during the Pacelli era; the CTO proposes reducing it to a Simplex across the USA (as as not to impede the Greater Advent Feriae any further), but as a Duplex in selected dioceses only, such as the Archdioceses of NY and Chicago. As a Simplex, Cabrini is commemorated at Lauds and Mass only of S. Thomas, after the Feria, on 22 December.

** The days within the octaves of the three Comites' feasts are Simplex in rank and are not commemorated in occurrence and concurrence with the Office of a Duplex I or II classis feast. Hence. the first time these octaves are commemorated is at Lauds on Monday, 29 December, ensuring a festal Office with minimal commemorations on the three Comites' feast days themselves.

  1. I still fail to see what a "simple" octave accomplishes during this time, when only the octave day will be celebrated anyway, the days within impeded by the Nativity octave. Do you wish to obscure the commemorations?

    1. I'll concede in this case it is more a nomenclature/categorization point than anything else. I suppose I am partial to the Dominican/scholastic mindset. In the practical order, the Simplex rank would stipulate that no commemorations of the comites' octaves would happen, neither in occurrence nor concurrence, on the Duplex II Classis feast of the Circumcision.

    2. So, I had to correct the Ordo above to exclude the commemoration of the Octave of S. Stephen on the feast of S. John.

    3. My unreformed Missal indicates the ad hoc practice: commemorations of the comites' octaves on other comites' feasts (ex. Ss John and Stephen commemorated on Holy Innocents), but no commemorations at all on the Circumcision, despite all being Duplex II class feasts. Perhaps it has more to do with the Circumcision being a feast of the Lord? If so, I would say it is another instance of the Pian committee missing the mark.
