Notes:

1. The CTO adds one feast beyond the 1568/1570 Kalendar, namely, S. Titus on 6 Feb (as a simplex to parallel the Tridentine simplex feast of S. Timothy on 24 Jan.).

2. The CTO does not accept the post-Tridentine additions of S. Andrew Corsini (4 Feb), S. Romuald (7 Feb.) and S. John of Matha (8 Feb.), all because they lack universal cult.

3. The CTO raises S. Agatha to a double feast whilst it was a semidouble in 1570. We do so to have her feast match the same dignity of the other prominent Virgin-Martyrs, namely, Ss. Agnes, Lucy, and Cecilia, especially considering the proper antiphons given.

Overall, the CTO, like the original TO, ushers in a growing ferial cycle following Candlemas. The newer kalendaria of recent centuries seemed to want to extend the festal spirit of the Christmas cycle beyond Candlemas with two more weeks of mostly duplex feasts only to shift abruptly to a barren, ferial cycle, which may or may not correspond with the onset of Septuagesima. The CTO aims to restore a more gradual shift from festal to ferial prominence in the month of February.

* In Dominical Offices when the Te Deum is omitted (and hence, a ninth respond is added), there is also no ninth lesson for a commemorated saint. There was an erratum on the original posting concerning this, and we thank Mr. Gregory DiPippo of New Liturgical Movement for clarifying this rubric for us.

After Compline of 13 January, the Epiphany Octave and Christmas season proper end, and the Tempus Per Annum ante Septuagesimam begins. Unless otherwise stated, from henceforth, all hymns of iambic metre default to the Per Annum doxologies sung in either the Ordinary melodies (on Sundays and Duplex and Semiduplex feasts) or the Ferial melodies (on Simplex feasts and Feriae).

14. S. Hilary of Poitiers, BCD, Semiduplex, White. Comm. of St. Felix, PM. Office from the Common of Bishop-Confessors and Doctors. At Mattins, 9th. lesson of St. Felix, Te Deum. * Ad libitum, feast of the Holy Family, duplex majus w/ Comms. of the Sunday, the Octave, and S. Hyginus. Neither the ninth lesson at Mattins nor the Last Gospel are taken from the commemorated Sunday since the pericopes are the same.

** Note that the pre-Sarto Breviary only lists five possible days within the Octave (numbered days 2-6 and corresponding to the days which are not the feast itself, the Sunday within, or the Octave Day) rather than affix them specifically to 7 January, 8 January, etc. as the Sarto version does. This means that on the Sunday, when the Octave is commemorated at Lauds and again at II Vespers, the antiphons for the octave are taken from the feast itself, whilst on Monday, though it be the seventh chronological day within the octave, the proper Bened. antiphon at Lauds is taken from the "sixth day" in the Proper. this having been leftover due to the intervening Sunday.

The lessons at Mattins, of course, are taken from I Corinthians beginning on Sunday, regardless of the placement of the proper Bened. & Magnif. antiphons.
